Wooden Peak have always been a band of quiet exuberance. Since 2008, Sebastian Bode and Jonas Wolter have been writing, developing and constructing music that trembles with energy and yet is always restrained. They fill quiet moments with irrepressible power, they place virtuosity, fantasy and demand at the service of small, dazzling gestures. In their four records they take the idea of "more than the sum of the individual parts" and turn it on its head. They create arrangements full of space and air, allowing their music to breathe and its energy to spread in peace.
Their new record is a compilation of electrified versions of selected previous tracks. Therefore, it's only logical to call it “Electric Versions”. It is equally logical to focus “Electric Versions” not only on the functional fourtothefour and heavy bass beats. Instead, the record is simplistic and reductionist, allowing space for more delicate beat samples and careful arrangements. Lastly, it was a natural conclusion to expand the band’s orchestration for “Electric Versions” to include clarinet and trombone - a deliberate choice of instruments to create a space for both electronic and acoustic sounds. Ultimately, achieving simplicity through expanding the ensemble - classic Wooden Peak.
Wencke Wollny and Antonia Hausmann are busy musicians in the german scene lending their instrumental skills and voices to other artists and to their own band Karl die Große. They blend into the ensemble Wooden Peak as if all this had never been any different. Sounds, ideas and habits from the last 12 years are transported into the present with ease, conserving the power of every moment whilst setting it free. Using guitar, sample park, trombone and bass clarinet, they create clever rhythms and bizarre arrangements, they draw eccentric images in jarring colours. Hausmann, Wollny, Bode and Wolter are firmly grounded in their music, fluctuating between a common core and peripheral perspectives. Remarkably simple and within an impressive context.
Jonas Wolter's singing has always reflected the level-headedness of the music. But "Electric Versions" also gives him more space and his lyrics a platform, placing three more quiet voices at his side and pushing lyrics gently forward to the edge of the stage. Social blindness, self-optimization in times of neoliberalism, rules and breaks, gross simplifications and the despair of it - "Electric Versions" throws light on this special language, which is free of pop clichés, asks questions, disrupts boundaries, but always allows for charm and enchantment.
"Electric Versions" collects interpretations, replays and updates from the band’s debut to the last album "Yellow Walls". It is an exhibition, a snapshot and a draft of the future all in one. Sebastian Bode and Jonas Wolter think and develop music as few other artists do. Wooden Peak’s variations create sounds and experiments that are in many ways incomparable. They are precise observers, delicate analysts, thrifty fantasists with the courage of precise simplicity. A band of quiet exuberance, vast and still radiant.
“Electric Versions” will be released on 12” LP + Digital via TELESKOP on 26th Feb 2021
Timeless favourite of ours, jazz-tinged music with an incomparable approach towards tasteful use of melodies. Highly Rec ! We´re proud of having shared the stage with his band Tortoise in 2016. WOODEN PEAK
